South Africa: Tweede Nuwe Jaar, Cape Town (2013)

Tweede Nuwe Jaar, or Second New Year, occurs in Cape Town, South Africa, on January 2nd every year. It is celebration born of struggle – a parade that honors the past while marching through the streets brightly costumed and painted. Revelers organize themselves into clubs or “klopses” and compete for recognition. The parade commemorates the time Dutch masters were on holiday and slaves were given the freedom of the city.
